Downspout problems are easy to spot once you know what to look for. Walk around your home during or right after a heavy rain and watch where the water goes. Common warning signs include water gushing out of a seam halfway down the pipe, a puddle that sits at the base of the downspout long after the rain stops, soil or mulch washed away in a fan shape near the outlet, and pavers that have started to sink or shift near a corner of the house.
Other signs show up at the top. If water overflows the gutter right above a downspout, the outlet or the pipe is probably clogged. A downspout that rattles in the wind or leans away from the wall likely has loose or missing straps. Any of these is worth fixing before hurricane season, when strong winds can rip a loose downspout off the house completely.
Most of these fixes are quick and affordable compared with the damage that misdirected water can cause over time.
